Spent a couple days re ripping my CD's to WAV files, used a considerably more space but needs must To give you an idea Westie take for instance you fav album THE BEATLES - ABBEY ROAD. That takes up 482MB of space in WAV, 269MB in FLAC, 273MB in Apple Lossless. Which tells you straight away the WAV is best with no compression. So your talking on average 4-5 CD per 1GB of space. That’s great thanks. 1tb would likely be enough for me, I reckon. That’s dead handy because at that size I can choose between SSD and a memory card. I think with my memory and my habit of mis-placing things, the SSD is safer. I’m bound to lose that as well but it’s easier to find when I do. Im using Micro card to play the files from that stays in the laptop all the time so you cannot loose it. but the SSD ill use for back up, keep it safe in the drawer. Ive just got to order a Sandisk ultra 256GB micro card now, just waiting for the price change to drop around £15 which they will. I only listen to a fraction of the albums i used to. Like i said to Baggs a bit back if i aint played it in a year it goes

Just waiting for new wireless mouse & mat, 90 degree USB A adaptor, new USB A to B lead, clear silicone keyboard protector & im all set to go. That will be the moment ive waited for a long time, to walk away from Hi-Fi. Its something i now just turn on & use like switching on the TV.
100% convenience that sounds as good as any high quality source at a fraction ££. Laptop breaks down in say ten years time, just buy another, the music will work exactly the same on a replacement, because it has nothing to do with the sound i am now not plagued with the paranoia of unreliability/breakdown like i would be a conventional Hi-Fi source. cos laptops cost peanuts, besides ive never had a laptop break down on me more than i can say for Hi-Fi CD players.
What made me get a shift on was i noticed my CD Player TOC had display digits faded in places & when i hit play it was switching to pause instead of play. First signs of things to come me thinks & secondly i hate the sight of CD's not to mention i don't have space for them, they are better off stuck in a box in the loft. It still amazes me you can get thousands of CD on a tiny card the size of your fingernail.
Once upon a time i was against this behaviour demanding a solid product like a Record or CD but nowadays i dont care so much what ever is easy & space saving suits me, however im totally the opposite with Books, I could never read an E Book & i like the look of physical paper books

I’ll be using lossless a lot, too when I finally get round to setting it up. I want to be able to have a lot of the same music on my iPads so I’ll still use Apple Lossless for convenience. I stil enjoy listening through speakers, and I also love using hard media, so no real changes for my kit, other than using a laptop as an extra source. I have a MacBook but it’s a few years old so I may as well use the cheapo laptop I bought less than a year ago and forgot I had. 1tb SSD will do for me, I think. I’m a bit scared of those tiny memory cards.

I’m a bit scared of those tiny memory cards. I know what you mean but its slotted in the side of the laptop never to be removed, so you cant really loose it. I thought it better than having a SSD in a caddy plugged in which involved a cable, less clutter without. Just keep the SSD for back up. This was one of the goals with me perfectly neat & tidy with no wires

I’m hoping to be able to hide the laptop altogether and just use the iTunes remote app. If I did have to have it visible, I really like those 90 degree adapters you mentioned. Nothing worse than having ugly cables sticking out sideways.

I’m hoping to be able to hide the laptop altogether and just use the iTunes remote app. If I did have to have it visible, I really like those 90 degree adapters you mentioned. Nothing worse than having ugly cables sticking out sideways. Here's goes USB 3.0 as well for fast data transfer. I have the SD card reader adapter & HRT Streamer into the USB 3.0 sockets, The wireless mouse in the USB 2.0 socket.. Im not entirely happy tho cos the streamer uses an old style USB 'B' on the streamer end which is only a USB 2.0, Lead, basically a printer lead. the USB 'B', 3.0 are a different shape hence not a compatible fit. However ive had no speed issues with the old 2.0 lead. Like you say those leads sticking out sideways look crap & are accident prone, a swine with stiff leads as well. Lucky ill just be using the one lead for the streamer. Idea is to have the laptop out, i purposely bought a 14" one so its as wide as the Trio Amp. I have the laptop sat on one of these in the below link. just to give it a bit of tilt so im not looking down on the keyboard. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08LK8B3B7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1People do things in different ways, some like to cast to TV so the catalogue is larger to see & easier to select albums/tracks by any means they wish, some like myself just want to replace a CD player in a stereo system.

I don’t think I could be bothered with that. Record covers are nice to have, but I’m not that enthused when they get to CD inserts. I don’t tend to look at the Cd case when playing, unless it’s new.

There are so many CD players out there you and I won’t have any problem finding enough working machines to see us both out. And then there are the gazillion CDs out there selling for a pound or less.

No streaming is a big no no with me. Im a bit pissed cos i dont want a CD player & a boat load of CD's hanging about.. im using the dedicated laptop as a straight source into the amp. The thing is the HRT streamer has the slight edge over the CD Player
Ill have to just be patient & soldier on with the WAV files.

Hmm…. It should stream my iTunes files as far as I can see. Anyone know if that’s right? I’d want to basically click,”play” on my iPad music and have it come out of my hifi. Sorry, I know it’s a really basic question but I really get lost in all the technical details.

I cant be arsed with all the Technical streaming crap. To me streaming via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is just as naff as RF headphones.
I just press play on a laptop media player just like i do a CD player jobs done. I knew full well id have trouble with ID tagging on WAV files where i would not with FLAC file but thought to myself wtf do i even need artwork, lost my temper & gave it the usual 'o fuck files' but that passed the day after . No technical just Rip the CD, transfer it to SD card & play, jobs a good un. Don't have to deal with big CD collections or even have to look at them. It's really no different from using a CD player without handling physical media. Im such a total idle basterd these days & my intolerance for clutter & untidiness is getting worse hence its the only way now for me, my desire to have Hi-Fi has well gone anyway. The small & simple the better.
Some may be asking why the importance with WAVE over FLAC. Well WAVE is pretty much a direct faithful copy of the actual CD where as FLAC is indeed lossless its still compressed hence the smaller file size in comparison.

I could also just link the laptop up to the hifi and use the iPad to play the music that’s on there via Apple Remote. The thing for me is that I really don’t want a laptop in the mix, and my iPads are all 512gb memory, so I’d get loads of music on them. Just being able to pick up any iPad and get the sound coming my system is pretty attractive. Having a few iPads and iPhones between us, using iTunes is pretty essential because I really want plug and play across all devices. I’m forced to use a laptop to load the music onto my iPads and iPhones in the first place, but after that, I can put it away and forget it even exists.
