Andre, So it's called the Arcam Alpha MK2, the one you find a bit soft sounding? Might try one someday. S. You ever tried an A60, Shane? No. S.

You ever tried an A60, Shane? No. S. Probably not something you’d want to keep for life, but they are incredibly enjoyable. They seem to have the opposite of Naim “grip”. They just relax and let the music flow.

Ok Dudes. Bought a near minto ARCAM 'DELTA 90' this morning. Fingers crossed the Phono stage will be up to scratch. If you cover up the top half of the amp it looks very similar to the old 'A60' so im happy about that..

Oh dear - amazing how nearly half a bloody century in this game affects perceptions All very well praising the A60 but you are aware it changed in it's life? The 'fowing musicality I loved in the early ones made way for a harder hitting 'dryer' kind of sound at the end and this was taken too far (for me) in the delta 60 which replaced it - the original designer had gone, did good things at NAD in the late 80's to early 90's and later started Myryad, the MI-120 being a wonderful amp harking back to the meatier tones of the A60mk1 and the pre/power they did (C200/P200?). The Delta 90 was OK and I still use a delta 80 tuner in the main system which one normally placed underneath so the amp controls were more accessible. Today, Arcam make highly competent but maybe not groundbreaking gear, nicely made (in China?) but no 'pizzaz.'

Aye the early 'A60's were best, the very first one with the DIN Speaker outputs used 8,000uF PSU Reserviour caps that were later changed to 10,000uF..The chassis were also changed to a cheaper affair.
'DELTA 60' was no good to me as it don't have Tone controls lol. If Chez wants to listen to the Radio i don't mind buying a 'DELTA 80' Tuner, they go for bugger all anyway & i know they sound good.

Any tonal similarities between the early A60 and delta 90?

Did it have a separate Cadmium plated base plate with bolt on Alloy Front/Back Fascia or a pressed chassis with Skinny Heat sinks?

The Delta 90, Alpha 10 and FMJ descendant have useful extra power and should be great really.
Something that amazed me with the original FMJ amp (a souped up Alpha 10 originally) and the matching CD player (perhaps more understandable) was how sensitive both were to positioning. I've been told I was imagining it, but I remember when the Something Solid suspended-balsa-shelf racks came along how much more 'musical' we thought these FMJ units sounded, both singly and especially as a pair. I believe Arcam put damping pads on some IC's here and there, but it's a long time ago now.
Some of the Diva range were good, especially the CD players which I felt benefited from the seemingly stronger casework. Easy sales for non-specialist dealers so good for Arcam.

I bought a 'CD72' had it upgraded to 'CD92' at great expense, which to me was a waste of my money. I also bought the Matching 'A75' & 'P75'. Even bought a second 'P75'. This system did not last long. I kinda liked the CD player as i liked Sony anyway, but the amps went. This is why i had no intentions going past the early 'DELTA' range..

No probs. Should be easy to service if its ever needed.
twenty odd years ago, we did very well with the Rega Planet CD/Couple/remote combination and used to compare it to the Alpha 8 and 8+ CD players. The 8+ gave it still competition and after 2000 or so when AV systems took over at this price point, the Rega became difficult to sell as it looked 'different' and didn't fit within a rack, yet the Arcam sold more easily after this.
Looking back, did I 'imagine' some of these things I wonder? Westie and I have had this chat recently and now I have no commercial interests at all, these memories make me question.
