Each to their own. I like compact looking, solid heavy decks.

No wonder you love the Rock. I kinda like it too, but the proportions were always a bit diddy. Nice and solid though

Course I bloody know the 20 and 30, used 'em too at various times in the distant past (well I feckin' would, being a know-all and all ) All I can tell you is that in my opinion, even the 10 is better than the black plastic things you play on them, but the dampener for me personally, is that there are far cheaper decks that do it the same! You may not like the sounds coming out, but it's a fair facsimile of the vinyl truth. Use a coloured sounding cartridge and you'll hear it immediately!

I know you like the Notts decks, Dave but are there any other ones available today that you like? Gyro? Orbe? RP10? Avid? Kuzma? others? Just wondering which ones you’ve heard and liked, I haven’t heard any of them so am curious.

I like the Orbe, which kind of 'sorts' a Gyro out imo. The RP10 is an amazing deck with Apheta 3 BUT, and it's a HUGE but... the sound is more digital than digital, if you see what I mean, literal to a FAULT! I heard one with the top Rega phono stage and Aethos amp into clinical Dynaudio's, which in themselves give a cold-as-ice presentation on the room I've heard them in. I'd like to hear a properly working Xerxes these days, especially with modern siting ideas and cartridges.
You know, a good working and properly set up PT with SME V made for a bloody good *sounding* deck. Build and supply reliability may affect them now they're so old.
I don't know the Avids and barely the Kuzmas, sorry. They all seem just big heavy vinyl spinners to me and apologies if I'm doing them down unfairly. I have to use a trusted old pal's ears here (who abandoned vinyl thirty odd years ago), but when he heard even the Sparta model (Kronos), he was absolutely gobsmacked at the total stability of the sound and he thought vinyl had never sounded so good to his ears. Mind you, he owns a D'Agostino integrated amp and twenty odd grand Martin Logans, so he's a high end believer... www.youtube.com/watch?v=frL6ivwCZKEBaby model here at $16000 - add up a top spec LP12 for comparison - www.kronosaudio.com/sparta-0.5.htmlAll my other turntable experiences are of now collectors items, such as SP10's, Micro DDX and DQX 1000 (Notts' Tom Fletcher had a DQX1000, at least for speed checking), Systemdeks, Logic, Oracle (effin' abortion that was as it never stayed in tune and the ceramic bearing thrust disc didn't last long). Also a lasting fan of the Sony 8750 and 6750 (we'd just become Linn dealers when these were current, so you can guess the rest ), Empire Troubadour 698 - forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/vintage-tt-shoot-out-empire-698-vs-thorens-td125mkii-pics-long.103063/ - he used an inappropriate (to me) cartridge as the Empire arm is massy Wilson Benesch do a deck or two and the arm is the memorable bit. Designer-fi at prices to match. The Source sounded slow and lazy, but I liked the Alphason Sonata with HR100S arm (worked a treat on a Gyro, that arm). Reviewer Martin Colloms got off on a Luxman PD300 suction turntable but for whatever reason, it was 'meh' to us and a pain to use.
Do you really want to know this shit? Nobody else does (shuffles off into the sunset feeling sorry for himself...)

Great answer, thanks Dave. And yes I really do want to know. It’s all interesting to me. My 6750 was beaten by my Xerxes but they were very similar in pitch and tone, which surprised me greatly. If you change the mat they are pretty much identical. I’d still love to have an 8750 though. Still wish I’d used that Orbe I had, but it was black and I was lazy lol.
One deck I’d love to track down was the Rivelin Audio Eclipse. A mate had a top spec LP12 around 1995. He bought a Rivelin which apparently left the Linn in its dust. Sadly it conked out just after the company folded and he sold it for peanuts. If I’d known I’d have snapped it up,

The Trouble with the 'ORBE' is everything about why people Choose Michell is then lost regardless if its a better sounding thing. You gotta remember people dont always buy things for how they ultimately sound & i have absolutely no doubt the reason they sell so many 'GYRO' is because of those spinning weights
ALPHASON SONATA/'HR100S' was one of the greatest British combos back then. I know the later 'SONATA' with the power supply was the better one obviously but the early version was easily the best looking
Was it Doug Bradey who was the big outlet for one back then?
