Here Here regarding milking. I mean why do we want LP's with outtakes on em, leave all that bullshite to CD's. I like Live LP's if they are not mishmash as in bits from various venues mixed together to create an LP like you used to by back then. If i buy a new release Live LP these days its one venue. No more than say £30 for a double album.
Records are getting more expensive tho. I was shocked at £27 i paid for each of those Van Der Graaf LP's when they were on Universal same as the Genesis LP's that sell for £22. However VDGG were very unpopular back in the day in their homeland, maybe the record company still have this mindset that peoples taste are the same as they were back in the 70's which is so far from the truth hence they may have intended a short run, i think this mindset maybe the reason a lot of obscure prog may not be getting re-issued. I wish they would understand that they are wrong. Ive noticed the VDGG LP's by the way are sold out in most places, Doesnt take a brain surgeon does it? I just dont understand the industry i really don't.

I think vinyl will not become mainstream for a number of reasons. Say you buy an LP from Amazon at £22, nip to an independant store they may be another £6/7 ontop. What are people gonna do, buy from Amazon. That alone will help kill the independant stores. They cannot afford to sell at the same price because they cannot buy in bulk plus they have more overheads they cannot sink into the buisness.
Records will always be something that people with excess money will up take & some wont care about the prices as long as they get what they intend buying but in all reality those big corporate mail order companies will kill it. I still say its short lived mostly faddy thing.
Im just as guilty for using a big corporate mailorder company which is not all do do with money its other reasons like i took a record back to a local independant & man was he not happy because i did, i just donrt need that bollox over something that is not my fault. It all too embarrasing.. Now i cant use that shop anymore & Independants with mail order, who do you trust to pack right, damage & faults cost the customer to return, which makes for additional cost. no such problem with the big Corporate mail order situation.
At the end of the day i dont intend to continue buying records long term, when i get what i intended buying from the offset of starting back up with records im done, it will just be the odd something that may surface like a Live LP from back in the day so my attitude is who cares if Vinyl fails or not or if independant fail, i just dont care. Most peope also dont care.

LPS are not the main income for the labels (it's streaming) so in spite of profile the market is relatively small. Popular Lps worldwide it's tens of thousands and a lot less for prog. Problem is they are too cautious and press 5000 when there are at least 10,000 who want a title. Probably most who buy VDGG bought originals or knew about the band back then but never purchased originals. Also these bands have picked up fans from later generations due to social media. If they took the risk of pressing more and selling them over a longer period the flippers and price inflation would be almost eliminated. Due to hype a lot of limited pressings sell out I think due to people buying multiple copies to flip. Analog Productions already sold 15K out of 20K UHQR Are You Experienced. How many are bought to play or by people who don't have turntables that are capable of revealing the superior sound quality? Just release titles and don't make them limited and repress a decent quantity as necessary as was the case previously. Most of these records should be kept in print. There are shops that keep their prices close to Amazon etc rather than HMV. Successful independents tend to be in out of the way places where rent and rates are cheaper and do mail order. Some like Diverse Vinyl will exchange faulty records without question no matter the price. Anyone who wants to make money running a record shop needs to accept they are going to get quite a high level of returns. Diverse tell me overall returns are low but that may mean some people are not fussy or don't play them. RSD has become a flippers paradise. I think I would need to be paid to bother queueing up in the cold to buy records these days. I did it once 5 years ago and it took a couple hours even though the queue outside the store appeared to be quite short. People got to be making money to be getting up at 5 am just to grab a few records.

why is it then when something obscure gets released & sells out straight away, is that not just silly pressing fewer than will potentially sell?
Something else i have experienced is things get pressed that im not even aware of till later on when its too late. The Internet is a massive promotion tool yet it doesnt get used to full potential, this must effect some sales id have thought. Because back in the day the lack of promotion put pay to a lot of prog bands & their sales. i feel it will put pay to their sales again if released 50 years down the line. Better promotion, more pressing would make more money no?
I never even knew the first Hawkwind LP had been re-issued three years ago till this morning & this is me that trawls the internet day in day out
As for Independent Record shops being more inline with Amazon, Not where ive been they aint.
