I used to run 2nd systems for years. I never felt any less satisfaction when listening to them. It’s only really a big deal if you sit comparing gear, but who in their right mind would do that? Just enjoy the music. That not to say the sound doesn’t matter, but if it pleases you, it’s a good system. Spending more is probably more likely to mess up what you have than improve it because you will lose the balance you have.

Sorry Shane i got fed up with reading the first few posts. Dont be fooled by bollox you read. These people that have a mega buck System & a Cheap system, I can bet you that even if they knew full well the cheap system sounded better than the expensive one, they would still keep the main system a main system.

Here’s a question: Do you think most folk with 2nd systems have them for more music or more Hi-Fi?
I can only speak for myself and it was definitely so I could have more hifi.

Mine was more hobby based after I left retail (back then, I could play with the toys all day at work and earn a living doing it). I still have the second system, now scaled down but sounding no worse at all for it! Not really needed now and once we move (I have to keep telling myself it's going to happen, 'cos it will before too long), I may not have much use for ONE system, let alone two, such is life and the changes it brings.

Some random memories of cheap systems being good:
1. At the Penta show in 1992, one of the most engaging systems was a revolver, a creek 4040 and a tiny pair of Alexander SE2. I sat through a whole album side and so did many others. No other room made me do that.
2. A Nait and Kans sang beautifully in our 2nd bedroom. I had a far more expensive system downstairs but the cheaper one made better music.
3. My mate’s system with a Mission TT, Myst amp and a pair of JPW P1s sounded wonderful.
4. Numerous bedroom systems I’ve ran with a Rega and a pair of Elas. Amps came and went but the Rega bits shone whatever was used. Cheapest great results were with Creeks.

Im not just saying it cos i have one but that TRIO amp i use is probably the most enjoyable amp ive ever owned. Getting to silly prices now it seems. Far better than the 'A60' i used on & off for years. Second most enjoyable amp was my old LEAK 'STEREO 20' I did the RATA rebuild to(ANSAR/KIMBER/HOLCO)

So many things that were skip fodder and apparently “worthless” now fetch big sums. Leak amps, Ls3/5As, Garrards, even Quad IIs. Anyone with a bit of vision and courage could’ve made their fortune out of it. Sounds like your Trio will be headed the same way,

Sounds like your Trio will be headed the same way, Yeh crazy innit but i wouldnt personally give a time of day for a Pair of Q11 & LS3/5a.. Always thought the Jim Rogers 'JR149' sounded better & i much prefer a pair of LEAK 'TL12 Plus' over the QUAD 'II'. Even a pair of LEAK 'TL10'. As for the GARRARD '401' Thats worth every penny within reason. Built like a tank & looks good untill it ends up in one of those stupid bespoke plinths that people think look good, adding a silly money modern arm is just basically insult to injury GARRARD '401'/SME '3012'/SHURE 'V15-3' Mounted in SME 'SYSTEM 2000' plinth is all you need, sounds fantastic & looks fantastics.

Rose tinted memories sir methinks
The Quad II's I have (Croft preamp driven) into Epos ES14's was a nice sounding combination - made everything sound the same though, as did the TL12's a customer lent me to play with for a few weeks at the time (odd little amps these were, hated different speakers being connected and needed time to 'settle' with the pair in use for some reason), but I disliked 3/5A's right from the (Rogers made) off in 1974/75 and positively hate them now, quacky, squeaky things JR149's when new were even squeakier I recall, but I seem to remember liking the 150 and the passive sub they did (I had a pal who was a box-swapper, so heard many things in a domestic situation)
Got to venture inland to collect my 401 but lord knows what to do with it as they're rumble boxes at the best of times, even in the Bastin plinths which were the best to use back then. Spacedeck always sounded so much 'wider' and 'deeper' where the 301 and 401 narrowed it all down and projected it forwards for some reason. Still love the 401 visuals though as it was conceived in my childhood era (early 60's).

Didn’t know you have Quad IIs stashed. Gosh Dave, by the time you sell all your gear you won’t need to sell your existing house: You will have enough money from your kit to buy another place! I’ve never heard a pair of Quad IIs but always wanted to.

Well as you know the 'JR150' were diferent cos not only were they bigger which looked odd they used Audax drivers instead of the KEF B110. Heard Quad II with different Pre-amps, disliked them, The best combo was with the Concordant Pre but still wernt fussed. Rather have a '303' any time of day. Id have love another '401' But im so determined im not not going back into Hi-Fi these days the desire for anything has gone with me.
