Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was supposed to be called Charlie And The Chocolate Factory like the orig. book title. It became Wonka cos the rights were owned by Quaker Oats and they wanted to roll out a new (Wonka) product, using the movie as sorta commercial. Roald Dahl was non-too-happy with the name change. Also he wanted comedy actor Erik Sykes to play the title roll, not Gene Wilder. And he disliked musicals (as we all should).
Well, in comes Sammy D. and does the "Candy Man" tripe. Sammay absolutely hates the song ( rightly so) and he is heard to comment something to the tune of: "This crap belongs in the toilet and that's where I fear my career is gonna go after this."
Of course , since the average human is MONG , "Candy Man" became a his only true hit and mega-seller.

I did not know that. I loved the book, liked the original film but detested the Johnny Depp remake. He’s someone I just can’t stand.

So Quaker Oats bought the rights to WWand Chocolate Factory for 3 million cos they wanted to go into candy business and already had the candy name down as Willy Wonka.
But physical chem. won the day cos they could not get the formula right - the candy would melt a bit, even in cold climates.
The movie was binned and stayed unappreciated for 6 years. Quaker sold off the rights for half a million dollah. Then VCR machines came in and all a sudden WWACF became a cult favorite.

It must have become a cult fav because at one level it reads like an evil, bad trip. Those ever-smiley-smiley freak-Oommpa Loompas were certainly head-fucked into cult-submission and, behind the adorable (?) good-naturism, they truly relish dreams of putting those children in danger.
Wonka is the master cult figure. Could you imagine the careless ,offhand Wonka as your Prime Minister running the country like he does his factory.
Its a dark psychedelic send-up.
Like those weird, twisted 60's UK children's programs with the cruelty children absolutely LOVE.

The Oompahs origionally were black pygmies clad in leaves covering their privates.
Apparently Dahl never meant them to be seen as slaves. Others thought otherwise and were offended. So the author changed the Ooompas "look".
