I ask because i have a small list of albums im looking for on CD but their seems to be no chance, cannot find them anywhere available new. Which im not too bothered about, i just noticed. Now ive been browsing 2nd hand to find that people are seriously taking the piss. It also looks like the prices of obscure Prog CD's used are a reflection of the obscurity & value of the vinyl LP's.In my eyes CD's no matter what they are, aint worth jack shit. The prics of asking are just idiotic, opportunist bull. But other than that i find present CD issues of albums do not sound as good as older editions, This remastered from original masters is also bollox imho. I have some of those sound worse than older editions imho. Here's a piss taker, It aint even Mint. Twice as much as it was new www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134343804958?

I really buy very few new releases but everything I want on CD is available on CD. Buying used CDs is usually a real bargain for the stuff I like. To me, this “death of the CD” is a manufactured one by the industry, just like it did with vinyl. Wait 20 years and they will do a CD revival like they have with vinyl.

Hopefully (yeah right) the loudness wars is behind us. Apparently the more limited dynamics of more recent masterings can be more in the bass than anywhere else, as mastering engineers crank up the low bass in older recordings to sound better on the little squitters we use as speakers a lot these days. The Genesis re-mixes seemed to do this and the Thos. Dolby 'The Flat Earth' was perfect example (AoS Marco found this issue unlistenable with too much bass on his already trouser-flapping Tannoys - what's happened to him?) where the extra tracks hadn't been 'remastered' that way and sound really good on a good sound system...

Death of the CD is a forum and press myth. While vinyl has overtaken CD sales in value CD sales in units are still double that of vinyl. In Germany CD sales are about 5 times that of vinyl in terms of units. In Japan they are I imagine far more popular as they produce a lot of fancy CDs, latest being MQA. It's mainly the USA that have dumped CD as they were quickest to dump vinyl. Most music of note is still released on both CD and Vinyl. I can still think of titles that have only come out on Cd fairly recently and more come out on CD months before the vinyl version due to pressing plant backlogs. As far as loudness wars are concerned some titles are still affected and probably a lot of chart pop especially but there is a lot of music being released on CD that isn't overly crushed.

Why is it then that there isnt much available anymore apart from the dregs? & why is it that used CD prices are idiotic?

There is a lack of stores selling them so I guess on line provides most sales with Amazon being the biggest seller. I've been able to track down long out of print CDs on Discogs for reasonable money as well. I imagine the biggest selling artist on CD (and vinyl) is Taylor Swift which boosts sales numbers considerably. If you are looking for obscure prog that may have got a limited reissue in the past that is different. For new releases there isn't an issue finding them with a click of a mouse. Prices for rare CDs are idiotic like vinyl. That shows there is a demand out there.

CD's are really great value at the moment. Plus, used CD's are less risky than used (and usually new!!) vinyl. I don't need that fucking stress.

I've bought many DVD's used via eBay and Amazon and have generally got away with it, many vendors slipping some bubble-wrap between the disc and outer hinged cover to stop it coming loose in transit. The one occasion this didn't happen and the disc was flying around was immediately refunded and I was told to keep the disc which still played alright, but had surface scratches all over. I have too many CD's - can't order more apart from some Big Finish Doctor Who audios, all of which came in mint condition, even lightly used ones (probably ripped by the previous owner ).

I love my CDs. Not as much as my records, but I do still treasure them. Most of my DVDs are box sets and about 3/4 of them are in Cyprus. I don’t really treasure them. They are just a resource, although I really do look after my things.
If I have a broken case on a CD or dvd, I replace it. I have spares I bought just for this.

The replacement TDK Jewel cases were the best quality but i don't think they sell them anymore. I bought a load of packs cheap when Virgin mega store shut down in Sheffield.

Im only short of 18, Ive found a few tonight at reasonable prices but the rest are hard & the ones ive seen are a piss take price. My CD's have to be 100% mint as do the Jewel cases.

I’m having trouble remembering what I have. I keep seeing CDs or albums and thinking I don’t have that version. Then I find two and three copies of it and realise I’ve been here before
