Prog was basically a disaster back in the day, was not enough good bands, very few made it which is no means a bad thing, the best ones were forced to jack it in. The premier Labels like Swirl Vert, Neon, Harvest, Deram was too much mixed bag. It begs the question what was actually the definition of Progressive when they were taking on Jazz Rock & Folk, Solo, Heavy stuff like they did. Certainly not included in my definition of Prog. The successful Bands didnt last long before they turned out yawn fest albums. all in all Prog has a tiny output of really great albums even though i believe the very early albums from said labels above were not what i call Prog, but who am i to know, no one knows only the bright sparks that think they do. Hence stuff the pigeonhole genre crap. Like i keep saying i know full well what is truly good & what isnt, sadly is small list but hey ho thats my choice.
As you may well have noticed i have a massive chip on my shoulder with the term 'PROGRESSIVE ROCK' & an even bigger one with fans that just make my chip larger. I cannot stand the reinvention of a Genre & even worse people that claim its the same as it was back in the days & even worse people that use the term PROGRESSIVE literally, Hello it does not mean music is Progressing like a lot seem to think it does but we all know that's just a cop out argument they tend to use in a tight corner.

So true. And the concerts as well. You'd have a prog band followed by some rural rock.
But your argument is flawed. Just because labels were not 100% prog don't mean anything. That's just business.

Well then bright spark you tell me what Prog is then cos those spin off labels were set up primarily as a outlet for the then up & coming Progressive movement

Stow that.
Perhaps Wallace will take your bait. It's not for me. Not when there is a Masterman on this forum.
Besides , after all this time, your question comes of not having sense enough to know clean prog from pestiferous slough.

Andre: I will say it again: it ill-behooves you to malign a progmasterman. Regards what is prog, do not over-fret about it. Things are loose, you know. Exactitude is a main symptom of your disease. Now.... Would you call Peter Hammill solo lps prog? Most would, yet..... Take the Genesis classic, "Nurasery Cryme". "Absent Friends" and "Harold the Barrel" are NOT prog. And I'd add "Seven Stones". Yet its called a cornerstone prog lp. Hackett says that by "Foxtrot" "we weren't calling it progressive rock then". Of course not. Cos prog was in its infancy. A major influence on basically all members of Genesis was jimmy Webb's rather complex structuring. Especially "MacArthur Park". Prog?
