I guess this will include both personal and general things, so here are mine in no particular order.
1. I want to have a more fulfilling life. I’ve been lucky in that Covid hasn’t impacted my health in terms of me or my wife catching it. Like many, it’s really taken away a huge part of my former lifestyle. I never go out for pleasure. Even holidays just tend to be staying in the apartment or walking in the wilderness. The UK weather where I live has been so bad this last 18 months, it’s been very difficult to go for walks or bike rides. I’ve never known so much persistent rain. Good weather and Covid mutating to less severe strains are the things I hope will give me and many others a bit more fulfilment.
2. I hope I have the courage (and the cash) to either retire or semi retire in Spetember. Right now I haven’t got enough in my life to enjoy lots of free time, so we’ll see.
3. I want to be able to part with some of the “stuff” I’ve attracted since Covid. I have more nice things than ever and yet I enjoy them less because there is stuff everywhere.
4. I want Britain to turn a corner and take some baby steps back towards prosperity. I don’t see that being possible unless there is a new political consensus around government intervention and investment being beneficial and necessary. Also a recognition that being back in the Customs Union is a no-brainier.
5. In the wider world, I hope to see a negotiated settlement in Ukraine that sees an internationally recognised solution with Ukraine being a neutral buffer. I also pray daily that Trump will be taken out of the Presidential race. Right now, I see him as the most dangerous person on the planet. He’s senile, amoral, mentally deranged and inherently evil. He will also never leave office if he gets in. I’d really like to see the back of Putin, Zelenskyy and Kim, but as always, the problem is who will replace them and could they be even worse? I have no such concerns with Netanyahu. He’s the very worst leader Isreal could ever have. I hope to see an end to him in 2024.
