Im not religious at all but i do like Church Architecture. I was Christened in the same St.Mary's Church of England my parent got married. However how old is your Parish Church? What i can make out by records is there was a Norman church in the same spot dating back to 1127, but the earliest recorded rector was 1227. Now the earliest Death/Marriages records i can find are from 1558. There are monuments inside the church, the earliest being from 1616. What i can make out is the Church had a lot of work done starting in 1838, Tower increased in height & the rest rebuilt by the same architect that designed Huddersfield Railway station. Work complete after a second rebuilt of the Tower 1869 due to it starting to collapse, 1894 saw the sanctuary enlarged, Vesty, North Porch & Organ Chamber added. Just wondering why there are no records prior to 1558, However is its no coincidence that 1558 was the year Queen Mary 1 died & Elizabeth Tudor became new Queen of England. Mary being Roman Catholic, Elizabeth turning that around to what would become Church of England. I liked to know when the original Norman church was replaced tho. I have seen a very old painting of what looks like the original Church but there is no artist name or date to it. Does look very old tho.

So many churches in Shotley Bridge and beyond, it’s crazy. I think St Ebbas church in Ebchester is ourclosest though (half a mile or so). It’s right opposite the village shop. The blurb says it’s late 12 Century. www.ebchester.org/community/parish-church-of-st-ebba/

I’ve never been inside it, but it looks nice from outside. I was tying to post a screenshot of local churches but Imgbb seems to be playing up.

Ours is a late 1800's build in red brick, but in a traditional style and with a traditional tower added in 1914 or so. A full peel of bells came later. It may be a more recent if traditional build, but there's still a great vibe of peace therein I used to feel in my home town's parish church which goes back a heck of a lot longer... My home town church - I walked that path back and forth when at high school many many times.

This is what I meant about the number of churches round here. I don’t even think they are all on here. Religion must’ve been such a big deal years ago.

Was same around here years ago there was small churches & chapels on nearly every street corner. Everybody went to Church on Sunday years ago. One of my worse nightmares would be to live in one of those spooky small villages down south where everyone goes to church, if you dont go you get removed from your bed during the night never to be seen again or am i watching too much TV

I really like old churches but it really does show how rich and powerful these religious establishments were. Often poor communities had loads of lavish churches when their congregations could barely feed themselves.
