Totally for me. When i discovered Specialist Hi-Fi. It was all about detailed bright sound imagine HEYBROOK 'HB1' with MISSION 'CYRUS ONE'.. In the 90's i dumped all that malarky & switched to Vintage Equipment, in doing this so did that sound i lusted for, these days i could not care less about SQ, i bath in the Romance in vintage sound.
I listen to files out of convenience (Which are not convenient) but that will change soon, im working on an all vintage Audio Cassette system. The romantic sound & vintage way of doing things far exceeds ultimate sound quality for me.
One thing i cannot do is go back to vinyl for three reasons. New records sound like CD's on vinyl to me, i cannot live with old battered originals as well as the cost being crazy & lastly the wife would kill me if i went down that road again. o & im lazy

Maybe not as extreme as you Andr'e, but hell, I was into the domesticated PA systems that were 1980's Linn and Naim based, so bright and 'quacky/tinkly' that no digital or other neutral source would work on them unless they were doctored to sound like a period LP12!!!, so what the feck do I know... Come late 80's, Linn themselves showed me how awful an LP12/Ittok/Troika was compared to the infinitely better/clearer sounding master (Linn LK1/280 and Isobariks post their carcass and later KEF mid driver re-design) and not long after, a major epiphany when hearing a small jazz outfit at a little pub in the Clwyd valley with family drinking Bass ale straight from the barrel, decanted into a jug and then to the pint glass. That experience changed my entire perception of a 'good sound' forever threepigeonsinn.co.uk/Oh feck, the picture shows they do Doom Bar as well and that's a great lunchtime pinta (not the same from a bottle at home).
The best tone I get these days is from the twenty five quid 7Hz Zero 2 earphones. The direct to ear canal sound transmission helps no end, my hearing issues only apparent below a lowish volume and plenty of 'sparkle' if played at reasonable levels and beyond - cough - . The Zero 2 bass reminds me of my beloved ATC's, clean, deep, *tuneful* on synth notes and no fluffing or distortion. Not the same as physically feeling the music as I once could do regularly, but it's better than the rather genteel tones I've been too used to these last eight years... Changes afoot methinks, but that means selling stuff with still terrifies me

Yeah I think lots of my wants have changed. It’s a really great question, if I may say so, because it’s not something I’ve reflected on.
Changes:
1. I used to like a brighter, more “knife edge” sound. Today I like a more balanced sound. 2. I also used to listen at the max volume I could achieve. Now I just like it to fill the room. 3. I absolutely had to sit in the sweet spot and used to focus intently on my listening, Now I just sit anywhere and just let things flow. 4. Most importantly don’t listen to the gear. In fact I never think about it. If I buy a new bit of kit these days, it’s to sit and look at, and to enjoy owning. I never, ever compare one bit of kit to another because it accentuates differences and fuels the madness of box swapping. It’s steered me wrong 100 more times than it’s steered me right.
Same:
1. I like a sense of space and I really enjoy that “presence” that you get with great recordings and good kit. 2. I’ve never liked overhang, so I still like my music to stop and start when it should, as well as having a good sense of rhythm.
