This hobby can & should be split up into different sectors, the mixing is the primary reason for arguments & up their own arse'ness (Not a real word) Vintage equipment DIY Hi-Fi that use vintage valves, Horn speakers etc Flat earth conditioned. this area is tricky because that way of thinking is ingrained & passed on down the line to reap more souls & destroy minds Hi-End. These people will mix with the Snake oil crew quite happily because that is what they use to feed their systems The moral of the story is keep away from each other. This is why me & Dave always argue Likewise for Record & CD mob. Tape Cassettes/Elcaset, 8 Track & Open Reel will happily dwell with the Vintage mob because they need each other to be one.

I felt very cross when Pink Fish banned Jez Arkless. I loved it when Jez pointed his finger at the snake oil retarded posters.

Best I don't retort Shane, but fancy-foo cap upgrades are beauty in the eye and wallet far more than the ear I'd suggest, at least these days (sorry all, I've done 'blind' sightless comparisons now and been comprehensively fooled). Andr'e, I don't argue with you really, but I spent almost all my proper working life on the other side of the counter from you and had different experiences. All hobbies appear to have tribal aspects. No time to tinker now, so better off out of most of it.

I don't fit any of the 3 categories you list for hi-fi. Maybe I lean a bit towards vintage records and CDs. Vintage hi-fi is just too much hassle to buy though I do have some stuff which is still working or assumed to work if used. Quite a few items I wish I hadn't sold. There is a path that avoids flat earth (crap) and hi end bling.

The forum is a lot poorer without him. Sure, he didn’t suffer fools gladly but he’s super-intelligent, vastly knowledgeable and also a really nice bloke. He was pretty funny regarding his comments to the folk claiming massive improvements from negligible changes, and never really nasty. Politics on the other hand, could really get him telling some folk what he thought of them, but in all the cases I saw, they damn well deserved it.

There is a path that avoids flat earth (crap) and hi end bling. Maybe I’m not the best judge but I don’t think I’m a great fit either. I’ve gone through phases: 1. My twenties when I believed the mags spoke the Gospel and that something priced at £500 was automatically twice as good as something at £250. 2. My Thirties when I got some of the stuff the mags said was as good as it gets and decided I was wasting my time. 3. My Forties when I just enjoyed the constant stream of different kit (a hobby in itself and a fun bargain-hunt, a bit like frequenting charity shops for bargains). 4. My Fifties when I’ve worked out what I like and also know the limitations of the room. I only buy stuff now to appreciate the design and build. Even then it’s very infrequent, driven by a bargain price and never upsets the system I use to play music. I’ve very rarely bought new, simply because I’m programmed to buy something for less than I think it’s worth. That in itself rules out new stuff, especially “high end”. I know if I won Euromillions this week, I’d never even think of buying any new kit. Nor would I “upgrade” because there’s nothing more I want from music than I already have.
