I’m not usually one to purchase new, but even I get tempted sometimes, and I thought it would be a good thread topic. I’ll kick off with this one. Is it a REAL 1210? Seems mighty cheap in 2020 for a decent deck. Given the build quality and reliability I’d say it’s an exceptional buy.....if it’s not some cut down version. www.westenddj.co.uk/technics-sl-1210-mk7

There's a lot of versions of this deck from Technics now I don't honestly know. The 1210mk2 was Rega 3 price or thereabouts twenty years ago I remember (the gold one well under £600 at Superfi in Camden when I used to call on them) so an updated DJ version at £800 kind of fits in. There's a domesticated one without the platter strobe and pitch tuning (SL1500C) but it's all getting too complex for me now with a fancy-foo model well over two grand. Total bonkers if you ask me (you didn't but I rant anyway)...

I wish I knew. I’m sure there will be some, but do they amount to much in terms of audible results?

I have the more expensive G version and it's damn good. Shows top level belt drives a thing or two. I'm sure the Mk7 is fine but it's lightly built to keep costs down and I believe only slightly better sounding than cheaper Hanpin sourced DD turntables. In fact the Pioneer PLX 1000 I had as a stop gap and sold only recently is heavier and more resistant to feedback apparently. If you want something really hi-fi standard you need to spend more on the better built GR model and on brief hearing I didn't think it had an obvious leap in sound over the PLX 1000. The 1200G is another league and probably much better than most belt drives for similar outlay. you pays your money. The best deal at relatively low cost at present are the new Evo speakers from Wharfedale. I'm using the large 4.4 and at £1200 these are ridiculous value. I'm positive they will embarrass some more trendy names up to £4K. The standmount 4.2 are only £800. This is cheap for new gear these days. youtu.be/8dNi7CHzE9Eyoutu.be/-tfprDU8944 Would add the Audiolab amp seen here as well as their CDT 6000 CD transport. Not to forget the Cambridge CXC CD transport. I've had one for several years and it outperforms some expensive (now vintage) transports I have had. Another huge current bargain are the new AT95 cartridges. The better and more expensive stylus versions are still mega value. Currently using the AT95SH on my SL1200G.

Thanks for the explanation. I’d assumed the same weight and build as the old 1210. I can understand why DJs aren’t as keen.
I’d never heard of those Wharfedales and I didn’t even know they made speakers at that sort of price. I have always enjoyed the AT95-based cartridges and one day I’d like to try one of the more expensive variants.

Some of the current Cambridge Audio stuff is good. I quite like their older CXA60 Integrated Amplifier.
Hope you don't mind me saying Westie. My father uses a Cambridge Audio Azur 851N streamer. Lovely bit of kit!

And alps discourage people who were only interested in these aspects. The worst of all worlds is where you get computer audio and DIY morphing into all this Pi shite. At least the Cambridge is a properly finished product and not an array of 10p circuit boards cobbled together on a plank of wood.

The worst thing is they don't stop at buying a Pi and mod the hell out of everything and add crazy expensive cables. After all that probably still sounds shit. Buying an off the shelf streamer that actually does something without having to be a computer programmer seems quite sensible.

Nothing wrong with streaming at all, but it's for a different mindset to those who like owning and handling the records or CD's. Don't cut your noses off to spite your faces is my suggestion.

What i mean is Computers are engineered in a way that every day life rely on them. Everything is Computer, Computer, Computer.. Gradually destroying everything. Records, Books, Shops you name it wil be gone before long. Even the music which in turn will increase the used value of these things for saine people that still want them.. industry have gradually destroyed themselves.

I knew what you meant. To be honest I hate computers as well, although I do find it very easy to use my brothers Roon/Tidal source, the problem is setting it all up.
