Y’know I’m not wanting to diss Japanese vintage kit because I’ve learned there’s a lot of good bits out there. The luxury DD turntables I’ve heard have been good and the one battleship amp I’ve tried has also been decent. My old Denon 1520 was also nice.
The thing is, I see a growing number of bandwagon jumpers. Fashion-conscious narcissists (as Shane rightly identified them) who want to jump on the latest trendy bandwagon in order to appear knowledgeable and discerning. Lots of vintage stuff won’t be up with the best even if it doesn’t need servicing (which lots of it will).
I just feel like there’s no middle ground. The same ignorant snobs who sneered at Jap kit in the 80s are now on the other side of the fence, sneering back at British kit. Why can’t people just buy what pleases them and stop caring about what others think?

Nowadays I just go my own way with Hi-Fi. Reading a little review from the home user/owner is fine. I try to avoid reading commercial Hi-Fi reviews.

Lots of Jap Junk but also lots of Jap goodies. I personally think their is more good Japanese Amps than Brit. Those 1980's Technics amps were great sounding, Even cheap as chips amps like the 'SU-V4' sounded great. Ignorance with people is those that pull things to pieces over its brand. I mention say Akai to an Audio Guy he will take the piss. but amps like the late 70's 'AM-2950' were stonkers. in fact if anything a lot of Brit stuff looks like its been knocked up on a Kitchen table.
Yeh & they say Jap crap but they dont say that when they want a tape deck & 'HAVE' to have a Nak, well ill tell you this, ive had them & yes they are good but every single one i had ran into Technical issues, Look great on the outside but no better made than a cheap Japanese machine & im not being funny but the Top line Techy Cassette decks back then sounded every bit as good.
You put a Akai '2950' amp under my nose i will snap it up before you know it, Brand name it is or not. Same goes for the top line 'GX' cassette decks they made back in the late 70's early 80's
