We'd gone over to the dark side by that point Big Jap firms wanted turnover and stock from all over their range, with no cherry-picking. Did you read the tale of the top hugely powerful small-house money D'Agostino amp creation. Kilowatts per side and the huge steam-punk meter on the front hardly moved when used as a normal amp delivering just a few Watts in domestic use. Owners complained the meter wasn't working, so he adjusted it to hit its end stops at well under 200W or similar and admitted it too. I have a range switch on the Technics amplifier power meters x 1 or x 0.01.

Amazing that a $160k or whatever amp couldn't have the same thing.....

I’m really enjoying the JVC amp and Reference 3a combo right now. It has an unassuming quality that doesn’t demand you listen to it, but just sits there and lets you enjoy it. It’s interesting because this is really what I’d regard as my “B Team”:setup. I can’t see me reverting to the “A Team” for a good while.

The 3a speakers look good in that Nextel type grey finish they do.

I think I will be staying with the B team. Less of the glorious soundstage i love, but the weight and solidity is seductive. Those Ref 3as are supposed to be ideal with low powered valve amps, but I love the SS welly I get with the JVC and them. You don’t see many folk using them in the UK but I think they are seriously under-rated. They sound way bigger than their size would have you believe. In fact I can’t think of another speaker that does this as well.

If you are getting more pleasure from the B team. Then sell on the A team gear.

If you are getting more pleasure from the B team. Then sell on the A team gear. S. I’m just too attached to anything from Sonneteer or Spica. The Orton could probably go as I’m more attached to the Campion. Those Spicas are so well finished and so much of me was poured into them, I’d never part with them. The few people who have seen them in the flesh just wouldn’t believe I’d done the work myself.

Pleased you're liking the JVC amp, I was tempted to buy one when those NOS ones were advertised on ebay at a reduced price. Not only that I see the Spica's have been knocked of their pedestals so to speak, by the Reference 3a's.

I recon all that gold replaced with Custom Chrome plate with a Chrome Moerch arm fitted would look really nice.

Not only that I see the Spica's have been knocked of their pedestals so to speak, by the Reference 3a's. Hi, really nice to see you here, I’ve got an embarrassment of riches and could live with any combo. The Spicas are still a “Better” speaker I guess. Their soundstage is way ahead. Also just a better sense of presence. That said, the Ref 3a will work in a position where the Spicas won’t. They don’t get in the way of the deck or the door. Whilst the Sonneteer amps are more detailed, it’s probably more a case of midband presence. The JVC is probably a flatter response amp and it has a lovely bass. It sounds way more powerful than I’d expect just by looking at it. Even though the 3as are supposed to be an easy load and very sensitive, I find they respond brilliantly to power. If I was deeming one pairing against the other, this Sonneteer/Spica combo would win. The thing is, I think I just enjoy the other combo more. It’s less demanding and more fun/exhilarating.. Not sure if that makes any sense, but it’s hard to describe. I’ve hesitated to call it PRaT but there is an element of that.
