Andre, I kneel before you to ask you for your divine forgiveness. Remember that debate we had about Brain Salad Surgery? You were in fact correct, and I am, as it transpires, a fucking twat.
I've found what must be my original 'BSS' as bought for me by my Mom when I was a mere schoolkid. I remember clearly her buying it for me as a Christmas present in 1973, and I rumbled it when she brought it home. After many tantrum tears and holding my breath until I turned blue, she allowed me to listen to Side 1 only and it then had to be put away until Christmas. Sheer fucking cruelty! I remember thinking I'd have to wait a whole month to hear the rest, which puts it very close to the original release date.
Anyway, joy of joy's it is indeed a 'SRC' 'AT' copy, still with the Atlantic advertising insert intact. I've run it through the cleaning machine 3 or 4 times, and it plays like an absolute joy. Stunning dynamics, and reasonably quiet for it's age. It does absolutely crap all over the SQ of the 'Deluxe' re-issue which now sounds very compressed by comparison. I guess that not having decent kit back then, I would have been completely oblivious of the dynamics.
One additional thing.....on the back of the cover it's mis-spelt as 'A Manicore' recording instead of 'Manticore'.
Did you ever get the copy you were after?

IT IS THE BEST POSSIBLE OLD COPY YOU CAN OWN OF THAT LP.. SPECIALITY RECORDINGS WERE THE BEST AT THE TIME, THEY MASTERED & PRESSED IT FROM THE ORIGINAL 1st GENERATION MASTER TAPE, THE UK PRESSING THAT CAME LATER WERE PRESSED FROM AN IFFY 2ND GENERATION TAPE. BTW: ALL ELP ALBUMS WERE ORIGINALLY MASTERED IN THE USA PRIOR TO PRESSING.
YES I GOT IT BUT IT WAS UN PLAYABLE, ONE OF THE DECIDING FACTOR TO ME SWITCHING TO NEW VINYL AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT. MY 'BSS' IS NOW THE PRESENT BMG PRESSING JUST BOUGHT 'WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS' ON BMG, THAT GOOD, CONSTRUCTED LIKE THE ORIGINAL WITH DIE CUT RECORD POCKETS & EMBOSSED SILVER ELP LOGO. JUST HAS NEW DESIGNED THIN CARD RECORD INNER SLEEVES INSTED OF THE ORIGINAL DARK PURPLY BLACK ONES, BUT IVE SWAPPED EM OUT FOR POLY LINNED BLACK INNERS.
IVE GIVEN UP CARING ABOUT WHAT I BUY NOW. JUST BOUGHT BRAND NEW PRESSING OF THE ELP/YES/PINK FLOYD/KING CRIMSON/GONG/GENESIS/JETHRO TULL. IM DONE NOW ALL THE ALBUMS I NEED NOW, I DONT HAVE THE TIME TO BE LIVING MUSIC & HI-FI 24/7 ANYMORE

Best BSS was the Victory Records CD, which restored the deliberately intended ssssparkle of the cymbals. No need for anything else as far as I'm concerned. The original vinyls were so damned noisy I went through countless copies to find one quiet enough. I think I kept it because of the iconic folding sleeve.

COS THEY WERE MORE THAN LIKLEY THE UK INFERIOR PRESSING THAT PEOPLE ALWAYS SEEM TO THINK ARE THE 1st PRESSINGS!. BEFORE THIS SHIT CONDITION ONE I BOUGHT A BIT BACK I USED TO HAVE A PRISTINE FIRST BATCH USA PRESS WHICH WAS QUIET & SOUNDED SUPERB..

I guarantee that, even as a CD lover, the Victory CD (which I have) doesn't even come close to the dynamics of the 1st edition vinyl.

THEY PLAYED T HREE NIGHTS AT MSG JULY '77. ALL THREE NIGHTS [7/8/9th] ARE ON BOOTIES. I CANT REMEMBER BUT I THINK THE 9th JULY IS POOR SOUND, HOWEVER THAT ALL DEPEND ON THE ORIGINAL SOURCE. THEY ALSO PLAYED A BENEFIT GIG AT THE MSG IN OCTOBER OF THAT YEAR, ALSO ON A BOOTIE BUT ALSO A FM BROADCAST!

DAVE: IVE NOT HEARD A CD ISSUE BE IT UK/EUROPE OR JAPAN THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE VERY FIRST USA SRC PRESSINGS. NO CD CAN MATCH IT.
EVER HEARD THAT SAYING 'DIGGING YOURSELF INTO A HOLE, WELL THATS WHAT THEY DO WHEN THEY FUCK ABOUT WITH THIS RECORDING IMHO.
