You're gonna hate me or take the piss, but what about a 6" standard ruler? Our eyes aren't so bad and different viewing angles and tilting the ruler each way can help as regards parallax errors. Bear in mind that Rega and top SME arms aren't parallel tubes (peeps often forget this)..

i always have the arm bearing end a little higher. Yep.Start perfectly flat then find the sweet spot with the VTA Adjuster.. I don't use it on the Rega arm tube, you can't. I concentrate mainly on the head shell.

i always have the arm bearing end a little higher. WHAT???!!!
You don't like highs Rudi, so set the arm slightly down! Raising it slightly high generally adds loads of hf distortion over what's already there (Decca's are opposite but no sensible person has a decca  ).

Dave is right about the effects, I like it slightly up at the back, but then I like treble.

I gotta see what goes, What im worried about is to use this Michell VTA Adjuster you have to remove the black sleeve on the base of the 'RB-250' Which exposes the Brass metalwork, The last thing i want to see is Brass showing if i have to adjust the VTA up! Fully down on top of the Adjuster the arm is 1.75mm higher than standard. I have a new 5mm thick Mat coming which is 2mm thicker than the original Felt mat so i have to wait see how it pans out.It might all ust work out without any adjustment yet. Fingers crossed..
Dreadful being a fussy twat, it really is.

Arm should usually new slightly down at the bearing end to get the right rake /clearance angle on the stylus tip. Raising it as Westy said will only add high frequency distortion. I've never found a carts sweet spot with the arm heading down to the cart end. As far as gauges go. Use paper. The stylus skids around on those glass things like nobodies business. The best tip ever though... put a tiny pinprick on the paper at the set up points. Then you can drop the stylus into it while you view without it moving plus you know its bang on the cross hair. Don't thank me , just remember me in your will.

I’ve had the same issues with slippy surfaces. I’ve tended to set arm height by ear but you will, find some people going to extraordinary lengths to set it: www.analogplanet.com/content/how-use-usb-digital-microscope-set-92-degree-stylus-rake-angle-sraWhilst is never go that far I did find one part of the article interesting if true: “ Once we began examining styli under the microscope it became obvious that finding the “sweet spot” was often a matter of luck and that often it would be impossible using the conventional “arm parallel to the record surface” starting position. That’s because we found that the angle at which the stylus gets inserted into the cantilever varies widely even among samples of the same cartridge! So it’s hardly useful when a manufacturer says “start with the arm parallel to the record surface and move slightly up or down from there,” unless you can be sure the stylus has been inserted according to “spec” in the first place”

For your info i use a card Gauge with a pin hole ofc you being the last word in Hi-Fi knowledge and all that
