This has been an on going circular issue with me.
Im original Analogue pressing fan but the reason ive been buying new pressings is they are Cheap & brand new condition, im always never happy with them which usually ends up up in tears seeling them on & going back to CD because the Analogue pressings are expensive. Money brick wall problem every time.
So then ive decided to keep buying old Analogue pressings but save money up for each instead of being impatient wanting a collection in quick time.
Why i think new pressings are pants:
1: They do not sound like old pressings, the extra details does not fool me but just makes them sound morelike a CD 2: The programme is too loud 3: Surface noise seems to be worse than old pressings, its as if the over loud cut is exacerbating it! 4: Even when you do get a decent sounding pressing you sre still faced with over bulky poorly made & finished sleeves, that just look stupid. The attempt to laminate sleeves is just as pathetic as the crap 1980's immitation laminate. 5: New issues loose everything about why i want an original pressing
All in all they are utter rubbish IMHO. The ELP 'BSS' was the last straw with me, i aint a great fan of this LP but what i was hearing was just nah.
Ive marched quite a few back, ill sell on the rest thro Auction site. Never again.

I do hate the thick inner sleeves which are potentially damaging. I must admit I’ve never had surface noise problems with any vinyl but the OC9 has always been stellar in this respect.

You have to be selective. In my view the good ones you bought are worth keeping. It's just possible to replicate the sleeves but not on a £20 disc. Laminate is no longer possible maybe partly due to environmental considerations and the manufacturers are gone. It will cost you a lot now to get mint originals of all the titles you want. I've practically given up on used vinyl because of quality (incompetent grading (using visual or a Crosley)) and rising prices. Could still get some nice pressings at a decent price in the early 00s.

Like i say i cannot live with the sleeve construction of the ones that kinda sound ok, i prefer to get shut. Going to carry on buying 100% Analogue 2nd hand records. But im going to have to find record stores i can physically look at the condition.. Don't need that many & i have to be careful tho as some 1st issues are crazy, im forced to opt for an early 2nd press.
All i need is these already got the other original pressings i want:
1970 - BLACK SABBATH - BLACK SABBATH [WWA Records] 1970 - BLACK SABBATH - PARANOID [WWA Records] 1971 - BLACK SABBATH - MASTER OF REALITY [WWA Records] 1972 - BLACK SABBATH - VOL.4 [WWA Records]
1968 - DEEP PURPLE - THE BOOK OF TALIESYN [Harvest Records] 1972 - DEEP PURPLE - MADE IN JAPAN [Purple Records]
1970 - GENESIS - TRESPASS [Pink Top Hatter Charisma Records]
1968 - JETHRO TULL - THIS WAS [Pink Rim Island Records] 1969 - JETHRO TULL - STAND UP [Pink Rim Island Records] 1970 - JETHRO TULL - BENEFIT [Green Chrysalis Records] 1971 - JETHRO TULL - AQUALUNG [Green Chrysalis Records] 1972 - JETHRO TULL - THICK AS A BRICK [Green Chrysalis Records] 1972 - JETHRO TULL - LIVING IN THE PAST [Green Crysalis Records]
1969 - KING CRIMSON - IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING [Pink Rim Island Records] 1970 - KING CRIMSON - IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON [Pink Rim Island Records] 1970 - KING CRIMSON - LIZARD [Pink Rim Island Records] 1971 - KING CRIMSON - ISLANDS [Pink Rim Island Records] 1972 - KING CRIMSON - EARTHBOUND [Black Island Records]
1971 - McDONALD & GILES - McDONALD & GILES [Pink Rim Island Records]
1972 - THE NICE - AUTUMN '67 - SPRING '68 [Pink Top Hat Charisma Records]
1969 - PINK FLOYD - MORE [Early 70's Black Columbia Records]
1969 - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - AEROSOL GREY MACHINE [German Fontana Records] 1970 - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - THE LEAST WE CAN DO IS WAVE [Pink Top Hat Charisma Records] 1970 - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - H TO HE, WHO AM THE ONLY ONE [Pink Top Hat Charisma Records] 1971 - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - PAWN HEARTS [Pink Top Hat Charisma Records] 1971 - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - '68-'71' [Pink Top Hat Charisma Records]
1972 - YES - FRAGILE [Early 70's Atlantic Records]

Seems i have yet another problem, that little lot on the above list even though they are not 1st issues will cost me in the region of £600 if im lucky in the condition i want. People are just utterly taking the piss these days slamming idiotic price tags on any old issue regardless of condition.

Spread that out over the time it will take to get them, maybe a year, and that’s not much more than a tenner a week.

£150 for McDonald And Giles (actually the one out of that lot I want) or £60 for an inferior EG/Polydor reissue. I found the reissue ITCOTCK equal in sound and cover quality to my Pink Rim and quieter surfaces. That's why I then bought all the reissues as they came out. Quiet surfaces essential on these and visual grading is not good enough. Would keep the KC reissues at least. Actually even the SW Tull and I have original or early pressings of all of them. Not surprised the Sabbath and Purple reissues are below par. There is an EMI Millennium Edition reissue of Book of Taliesyn that is AAA. Could do with an original Made in Japan as only have a Simply Vinyl copy.

McDonald & Giles is indeed about £150 for a Pink Island but about £40/50 for a Pink Rim Island. thats the one i want. No matter if the odd few do sound ok they all have one thing in common, shite cover quality. Spot the shite & spot the 1st issue. Stupidly over thick cover spines. Fragile construction.

Spines are generally wider to accommodate 180 gram pressings but not often as wide as that Trilogy cover these days.

I recon all the early 70s vinyl I have is 140 gram or under. I checked some recent purchases and only a 3rd have excessively wide spines. The worst are 3 otherwise high quality sleeves from Universal Acoustic Sounds Jazz series. Otherwise wide spines are double or triple 180 gram LPs. Check which plant those wide spines are made - likely Record Industry or GZ (they make their own sleeves). Some old pressings can be 150/160 gram but 180 gram is something that started in the 90s. In any case changes in cardboard and printing means you can't remanufacture a sleeve exactly like vintage 60s and 70s. The one you show looks low quality card and assembly which is the main issue. The nearest to original is US style 'tip on' jackets from Stoughton printing (thick card with the printing on paper applied with adhesive).

Im not really understanding why you say the wide spines are for heavier vinyl. What the spine got to do with anything! Single sleeves are not made any wider!!
No matter i think they are all junk & will never ever entertain one again. Ill stick with the likes of Ernest J Day, Garrod & Lofthouse sleeves, real quality.
