At the time I started buying records in earnest, the Vertigo 'swirl' label had come and gone. As a consequence, any Vertigo artist I have records by tend to be on the 'spaceship' label.
Generally, they still sound pretty good to my ears. Has anyone ever done a straight A/B comparison with swirl vs spaceship releases, and if so are they closely matched or otherwise?

Yes loads. I still have two Gentle Giants on Spaceship. Really not as good sounding & the vinyl is thinner.
Actually things like BLACK SABBATH 'VOL.4' on spaceship is more scarce than Swirl Vertigo press.. While we are on SABBS. The early WWA pressings were Swirly pressings with the 6360 cat number scratched from the dead wax
Swileya re a cult Label & prices will alway be high. Same with RCA Neon even though there was only 11 LP released. Both label imprints were ran by Olev Wyper. Never understood why Neon are so expensive as there was a run of Ten thousand of each LP!

Strangely, just playing 'Three Friends' by GG now as I type this. I've always thought the SQ's really good. I'd love to hear the swirl variant if it is better.

Alucard have officially Re-issued the Gentle Giant LP's im trying to get them but they aint cheap. Only the first four LP's were on Swirl, the following couple were on WWA then it was Chrysalis. No time for em after WWA Records tho.

Heres a quicky. Hes Foreign & probably got European pressings that aint worth as much as the UK pressings. However the first four KING CRIMSON LP's were pressed on New Zealand Swirl Vertigo in laminated covers. They looked beautiful.
The Mellotron Player hes refering to on BEGGARS OPERA 'WATERS OF CHANGE' was Virginia Scott.

Yes, those are just like mine. I have 'Acquiring The Taste' and 'Octopus' on the same label too, I also have the American jar-shaped version of Octopus.
I've got a stunning bootleg of theirs called 'Playing The Foole', which is easily one of the best Boots I have.

Got to be honest, I saw it but didn't bother. I'm overrun with fucking records and CD's. Hence the desire to thin it out, and to create a manageable and convenient streaming platform. I'll still have my mad vinyl sessions, obviously.
With the exception of 400 or so vinyl albums which I can't be parted from at any price, everything else can go. I've had the pleasure of owning them and now it's someone else's turn.
Weirdly, the older I get the less bothered I am about material possessions.

Im same. Only have a modest list of LP's i want to re buy, no way on earth will i entertain another big collection again..My attitude now is if they dont get played regular whats the point in the shelf space.
400! No way could i chhose 400 good LP's there just aint that many i would want to keep. Try 100 LP's max that i think are worth keeping.

Hey Andre, have you got 'Space Hymns' on swirl? My copy is the 'Spaceship' variant. No sold it years ago. I did pick up an unofficial Yellow vinyl some time ago that sounded suprisingly good. Before i dumped CD i used to play the original Repertoire CD till the Ramases CD set came out.

btw: if you have an early Spaceship Re-issue it will still have the poster sleeve & the vinyl should still be on the thick side. Dropped the poster later on..
BEGGARS OPERA 'PATHFINDER' has a fold out poster sleeve just the same.
I recon 'SPACE HYMNS' will be one of the next Swirleys LP's to be re-issued on Repertoire

I do indeed have the poster sleeve, but I wouldn't describe the vinyl as thick. It does sound really good though.
