I’ve had many systems that fit the description. You get them set up and you think “wow”! You go through all your best recordings and come away exhilarated. Then after a few weeks you start to tire of it. Trying to listen at other volumes falls flat, and your listening sessions become less frequent and get shorter,
Then you start looking at cables or find other things to tinker with: Always seeking a thrill. You also only favour recordings that sound good loud. Sound familiar?
For every system like that I’ve owned, I’ve heard a dozen more in dealers, at shows and on YouTubes. It’s sad because I feel they are missing out, it’s this BS about trying to recreate a live event that measures flat, goes down to 20hz and can kick out 100+db. It’s like trying to create a waxwork of a person that’s an exact physical replica but missing the fact it will never have a soul.
Forums don’t help, because they indoctrinate people into trying to create a system that others will approve of. The objectivist forums are also unhelpful because they miss the only measurement that matters: listening pleasure.
I love listening quietly these days. I spend far longer listening, I have wider tastes and I can talk with my wife without shouting or having to compete. I get more pleasure today than ever and I guarantee that most “hifi” folk would shake their heads at the lack of impressive hifi characteristics in the music that is rejuvenating me by the day. If you have a system that’s “impressive” and “loud”, please ask yourself who you are trying to impress and why? It may be the key to freeing yourself from the strait-jacket living by other people’s rules.
