I thought this would be a good place to discuss the daft things we or others have done in pursuit of the holy grail of hifi sound.
I wish I could start with a one from years ago, but I just did something daft yesterday:
I use a DIY speaker cable that I like. Positive and negative are separate but they each use two runs of the same cable lightly twisted in order to increase the diameter. I had used a single run at first but I assumed tw would be better because of increased thickness, I think it sounded better but probs imagination. I’ve used this wire for years now and it’s seen off loads of others with ease. This is the stuff,

And so to yesterday.....
Of course, the OCD wouldn’t rest at two lengths twisted because three would be better, wouldn’t it? Actually it sounds “darker” which usually means “worse” to me. Took me fecking ages to undo the existing cable, twist in another length and then heat-shrunk the 4mm plugs because the covers wouldn’t fit due to extra cable thickness.
So what does a hifi nutter do now? Well he’s likely to tell himself it’s just “burn in” and the sound will improve over the next 100 hours.Trying not to be any more stupid, I will reject the burn in idea and choose one of the following,
1. Leave the damn thing alone because it’s probably exactly the same sound as before and I’m imagining the change.
2. Spend a couple of hours undoing and re-making the original cables. Chuck the new wire away and put the £30 and four hours wasted down to experience. Making sure I remember this craziness the next time I feel a need to try and improve a sound I can’t find a single thing wrong with.
I think it should be option one but then I’m probably mad enough to go with 2.
