Why is it that Vintage Hi-Fi & modern Hi-Fi enthusiasts dont see eye to eye?
I think its a case of two world. Hi-Fi morons are generally using the term look for the ultimate sound, constantly swapping & changing [Wasting time & money], Listening to the Hi-Fi & not the music, Hi-Fi is the Tool, Music is the test equipment, no matter how much they deny it.
Vintage guys love the nostagila, the Aesthetic & the cosey sound that is lost to modern gear. The use a stereo for what its meant to used for, listening to music.
So two different worlds that will never agree.

What modern HiFi enthusiasts? They're mostly all old fogeys newly retired aged from mid 50's at the youngest generally and with bulging pension pots now the kids are away and settled and/or cashed in shares/investments! They grew up knowing Linn and Naim by reputation and may well have had a lower cost enthusiasts stereo from the early 80's like a Rega/Creek,NAD,A&R/ Mission 700's, HB1's, AR18's or similar but can now look at Naim streaming options, an LP12 of some description (bloody thing won't die) and whatever bling boxes they're sold with it! They don't need to look at cheap used stuff now. The people keeping the used market going I reckon, are often collectors with no musical interest or forum bods who chop and change on a whim for the next best thing! I've just been able to finally sell my Rogers 5/9's - guess where they're going? certainly not in the UK and the recipient is paying a fortune for shipping and import duties as well as me paying eBay & Paypal charges and all because I couldn't do a bloody home dem of them. Better than sitting in their boxes in our garage I suppose

Im refering to people that buy new equipment aswell as the conditioned flat erf mob. Bypassing your above post that im struggling to make sence of as a reply to the o/p. Im on about mostly agreeing on things from the past coming out with term like 'long in the tooth', 'wooley sounding in comparison' etc. which is quite easy to say when you listen to gear that is bleeched of all the soul of the music. As for people buying old gear, i dont think your are quite in tune with it. In case you failed to notice a lot of modern homes these days have Retro decor full of old furniture from the 60's/70's. These people buy old vintage equipmet to install into the living room. I was only watching a very well know cook on the TV the other day that is very wealthy, with a Pioneer 'PL12D' playing records while he was cooking. He could afford any deck on earth but uses this, his home was Retro mdern too. More people than you care to believe do not care about specialist Hi-Fi systems. Putting aside the overrated Britsh Vintage Junk, you can now pay a lot of money for Mass produced nothing special Japanese gear from the 70's if its mint cos people with these homes want them. The overated British Vintage junk is what goes abroard to the far east, But that is totally a different thing.

Not in tune with old gear? FFS Andr'e, my vinyl sources are 70's, the CD players are late 80's to early 90's, my amps are early 70's and one pair of speakers are from 2007, the others from the 70's! The vintage fad will be over in a year or two I bet. very few ever cared about specialist audio as it's a niche within a niche and youngsters today want headphones anyway. UK Audio Forum peeps don't buy new gear generally unless they're in a manufacturer's clique forum. The few UK based peeps buying new gear don't go on forums and if they do, they soon leave I gather, as we're judged a bunch of nutters! I think PFM may have a few crossover bods, but I rarely go there now unless prodded hard to do so

Not being in tune with today Decor & wanting 60's/70's look + matching Hi-Fi of the period is what im on about. People will pay mega money for artifacts of that period as long as they are in the condition, what im saying is a hell of a lot of people want this look & majority really are not into Hi-Fi. Vintage fad may be over soon within Audio nut circles but they will still sell for the look elswhere by normal people LOL. Im not for modern ways but if files & such destroy the minset of pillocks into Hi-Fi im all for it. Here this is what people have these days, our living room is modern but has the Retro look of the period. People want the stereos to fit in cos modern stuff looks stupid. I have a new big flat screen Samsung TV, that in it's own right looks very nice but i hate the sight of it. www.decoist.com/2014-01-21/retro-living-rooms-ideas/lovely-design-idea-for-a-small-living-room/Anyway were going off the o/p its about not getting on with each others ideals.
