The Edwards Audio deck has taken me back to when I was 21. We were newly married, had just moved to York and had a wonderful apartment right outside the city walls. We were only about 100 yards away from the Sound Organisation and life was incredible. We ate out every night and York was just such a wonderful place to be in. Living there was like a long-term holiday and I’ve always regretted returning to the North East.
My music system was basic, but still right up there with the most enjoyable sounds I’ve ever had. Turntable was a cheapie Mission 775LCT with an AT95e. Amp was a Rotel RA840BX2 and Speakers were Monitor Audio 252s.
Now we did have a big living room with concrete floor, high ceilings and loads of free space for the speakers. I’d always put the great sound down to that room and also our incredible lives: Fit, young, vivacious and with a great lifestyle. It’s hard to sit down and be unhappy when listening to music when life is so sweet.
The Edwards Audio has made me realise that it wasn’t just the room or the great lifestyle. This was a simple, honest system that got the music 100% right. Sticking the Edwards with the utterly lovable Leben and my Spicas has the same qualities and I’m still able to enjoy that same wholesomeness today, without the flush of youth or the great lifestyle. Ok, so the Leben isn’t exactly cheap, but it is a very simple, small, low powered amp that just plays music. It’s closer to that Rotel than anyone would expect. The Spicas too, aren’t a million miles off the 252s. In their home market, they were a budget speaker with paper driver and enjoyed free space placement. The Edwards and Mission are also similar, especially when you add an AT95e. Although I must admit to being smitten by that unipivot. It’s a better arm than the OL on my TransRotor.
And so I feel like I’ve come full-circle with what I’m playing today. It’s brought back great some memories and it’s taught me that I wasn’t viewing my early system through rose coloured glasses. I remember it as “good” because it was, and the same values brought together today still are. If a system stirs your emotions, engages your senses and makes you feel happy, it’s a great system. It doesn’t take a lot of money to achieve.Just a bit of luck in finding a combo that does it for you.
