I’ve believed for 35 years that MCs are intrinsically superior. After all that’s what everyone said. Also the MMS I’d heard were poor. Goldring 1000series for instance. Even the K18 wasn’t going to be competing with a cheap MC.
My recent encounter with a 1970s MM has turned all my “wisdom” on its head again. In no way is it inferior to something like an OC9, which had itself bettered many an expensive MC. Another hifi truth that turned out to be false.
From what I’ve read, this cartridge is better than even the latest Audio Technica MMs. You can also remove the stylus assemblies form the latest AT MM cartridges and fit them to the carrier of the AT15.
I’m now looking out for an AT15SS stylus. I’m sure there will be better MCs out there if you want to pay £1500-2000. I don’t, not for a stylus that wears out. Besides, this combo now beats CD sound for me, so how much better can other carts be?
There’s a rich vein of old AT MM cartridges if you have the time, patience and good sense to explore it. I hope my experiences encourage others.

The balance has changed though in recent decades. Older models, shibata or not, had little suckouts on the hf region, nothing severe or to come back at me on and nothing like as bad as Shures of old, but certainly no peaks in the response. Latest models seem to be flatter where we really need it to be, but then a little peak over 10khz where there's not much going on except 'air' going on. I think i can say with evidence that you wouldn't be disappointed with the AT 740. This one in direct comparison with the 540 (they use the same stylus you rejected and I believe the same basic body) shows the gentler balance of the family body but with metal mounting bracket. When I was thinking of using the GL75 as a more permanent 'office' deck, I'd considered getting one as the K9 worked so well in this massy but underrated old arm. www.lowbeats.de/test-audio-technica-vm740ml/

I think the treble response of the quad Shibatas was supposed to be extending to 80khz. It seems to show in terms of great HF and sibilants.

CD-4 was in the 30kHz region I think and this rarely lasted more than a few playings I gather. MC's can certainly go out to 50khz I gather (cutting heads can't though apparently) but MM types tend to be fussy on loading (resistance, capacitance and their reaction with the inductance in the coils) and this is one area MC types really will pull ahead hugely.
