I find it hard to imagine anyone listening to that stuff by choice. I managed about 10 mins but had to force myself. Apart from it being a cacophony most of the time, the thing I really hate is the distortion (feedback?) you get with many of the keyboard and electric guitar sounds. I just can’t see how anyone finds that pleasing. If your Hi-Fi produces distortion, it’s an absolute “must sort it” issue. And yet folk have brought that into music. I just don’t get it al tall. I can hear the complexity and realise lots is going on, but to me it just descends into distorted chaos. But then I really don't like rock music of any kind, so prog isn’t really an exception.

You have to understand the chosen Prog instruments: Hammond Organ, Mellotron, the sound signature they provide comes from distortion, they just would not sound the same without. I couldn't imagine a Mellotron without wow & flutter issues. Same as i could not imagine Robert Fripps guitar without what he adds to the sound.

I think I’ve nailed why I hate it though. Distortion to my brain is just “wrong”. I guess it’s like some stinky cheeses: Are they gourmet delicacies or do they just smell like a dirty body part? As long as both parties leave room for the other side to enjoy or abstain it’s all good.

That aside you have to agree they were very talented musicians that excel at what they did.

That aside you have to agree they were very talented musicians that excelled at what they did. I can hear and see that from the video footage of Keith Emerson.
