Yeah once refurbed I’d bet on vintage gear over new stuff every time. As long as it’s done properly which I’ve no doubt Andre’s will be.
I really hope the move goes well for you Dave. I get that we are very different in some respects and this move will be a nightmare for you in many ways. I still reckon you will come out of it liberated and with a system that better suits your needs, as long as you don’t try to pretend it’s not happening until it’s too late. The fallout afterwards is far worse if you move with loads of stuff you have to deal with afterwards.

Just on low powered amps, I was reminded today of the subtleties they have over the more powerful ones. I can hear it consistently although I realise those who believe in measurements over their own ears won’t buy that. Using the two Campions on one channel only, reminded me of just how much better amps sound with a transformer for each channel. Again, it’s obvious when you hear it. Not sure if any measurements support it but it’s so obviously there in the sound, it doesn’t matter.

True. There’s definitely a quality to low powered amps that you appear not to see in measurements. Interesting to me, as I feel it makes me engage more with the music.

I maintain it's compression and/or soft clipping in the best amp examples if you listen at 80+ dB in the listening seat with a 20W or less amp as you discussed a while ago, but it doesn't matter really, does it, as long as you play more music and enjoy it...

Distortion, Soft Clipping or what ever it be, indeed does not matter one hoot as long as it sounds good. Its called listening with your ears. Id rather have an amp with all those Technical foibles than a souless perfectly specified amp. Like wise id rather have Tone Controls that can trim up a not so great recording or add of take away tones to suit a commercial environment rather than put up with it for the sake of flat amp.

Yeah, we all actually agree! It really doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy it Don’t get me wrong: I’ve heard plenty powerful amps that measure well and sound very good. If you listen at realistic levels some way away from your speakers, and the latter event crazily efficient, a big amp can be bloody great. That JVC amp I love is really lovely in such circumstances, and must be one of the daftest bargains around given that it also has a decent DAC and phono stage too. It’s just that the two Campions and the Leben do things it can’t. If I could only find an amp that did both, I’d own just one amp. The truth is, I’ve never found an amp that can do both and I am at the stage where I don’t think such a beast exists. I could be totally wrong on all this, but until I hear an amp that wins over my fave big and small amps on all counts, I will suspect there are strengths to each that it’s impossible to obtain in one package. The NVA A80s should have given me all the A40s did and more, the only difference here is power. It’s the same circuit as the baby A40s. And yet they lost all that was good about the A40s to my ears. Those 4xA40s were absolute belters. Amongst the very best I’ve heard. Little amps again though.
