Heybrook 'HB2'..Mission '70' but the Mk.2 not the Mk.1. Getting a pair of these with the grill material intact is near on impossible, its usually knackered on the corners & bottom, the Bass units will most probably have surround rot too but you will never know unless you take the cabinet apart...

Almost bought a tatty pair from a junk shop but he wanted top dollar and one tweeter was blown.

'HB2' always go for a high priced compared to the bigger 'HB1'. Both are a superb speaker.

In my experience, HB1's sound much the same whatever you use with them just like my old Wharfedale Denton W20's, so are utterly safe but ultimately bland in their liveliness (maybe old unobtainable tweeters have mellowed, i don't know, but they got spikier as they went on.
HB2's needed care with rock music programme, but they were naturally clear, amazing on light orchestral, rock at lower levels and chamber music and I remember them with great fondness - my dad had a pair for ages despite the foam grilles disintegrating. I think tweeters can now be got again but maybe not the bass units. I loved the way that the port tube acted physically on the back of the bass driver via a lump of blue-tac thus helping box resonances a bit.
Apologies all, I just don't get Mission 70's - ANY of them. Cuppy/nasal on voice and despite the clever (very) thin-wall box, it still vibrated and sounded too 'small' I remember. I did like the 700LE and subsequent slightly larger models though (didn't Cyrus do a 781? - paper veneers though)
One ghastly made success story - accident or design I don't know - was the KEF Coda 7 (and the floor standing 9). WAY better than the flimsy cheapo build would indicate and the box (I won't credit it by calling it an enclosure) actually aided the sound rather than hindered it (interesting tale about it in the KEF book). The larger Coda 8 was too soft and smooth for me (same with similar price Tannoys of the era), but again, not thuddy or squawky as it could have been.
While my mind is there, I'm going to give a very cautious shout to the original Rega Kyte (I haven't yet heard the new one) and Ara replacement. VERY good mids as practically all Rega speakers have, a slightly spitty top well suited to their 'slugged' MM cartridges, AT made Carbon aside, but absolutely no bass unless you use their original wall bracked and hang them on the wall as intended. You could call them baby Kans I reckon and they were actually better integrated, especially the Ara.
As regards the comments above, ANY speaker jammed back to the rear wall will have limited 'depth' perspective. These babies loose any bass when pulled out, so it's an acceptable compromise.

I think the 'HB-2' Used an Audax mid/Bass unit.Still prefer the HB-1. Put these in a well finished cabinet they will be a nice speaker all round. Sounded fantastic with my old 'A60'

I won't labour it, but that's the 'thing' about the HB1 - they sound the same (lively, involving on rock music and exciting) with everything you play into them... Earlier ones with wood trims on the front could sound sweeter, but all bets are off now as they all suffer foam rot and older ones are nearly forty years old (I think it was '82 they came along). Probably well worth doing up if you're able to re-foam the drivers and rebuild the crossovers if necessary. I could never have owned HB2's myself, as I'd have destroyed the bass units very quickly.

My 'HB-2' were the Black/Green printing. I think the Black/Blue were the later issues. You don't see many of the early ones with the wood trim or the ones with the black/Gold scheme or the Wood effect Baffles..
Last time i knew you could still buy a Vifa Bass/Mid unit for em..
Gotta admit Dave, Pete Comeau was a great speaker designer.

Gotta admit Dave, Pete Comeau was a great speaker designer. In the very early years, KJ Wigmore St were Heybrook's largest dealer and we knew Peter Comeau and Stuart Mee very well (Pecom Acoustics). Stuart went into the wine business (I hope an excellent move for him) and Peter went on to many other successful projects (I've only heard the Wharfedale Diamond 220 - last I saw was that black ones were on sale at Richer for a hundred quid - from his current design work, but they're really good in my opinion and may well shatter some expensive confections of previous decades). I wonder how 'close' the current Linton with stands are to say, a mid size Harbeth or Spendor - balanced on the warmer side but a third of the price while looking similarly old fashioned...

Nothing wrong with subs. So much bollox has been written, usually by people “parroting” what they have heard from others.......who likely also have zero experience. I’ve had 5 subs in my time, even tne cheap ones were worth it.

The flat Earth Brigade from the past really need to fuck off from this hobby. You will find they are the pollutants.
