When Steve Hackett ,after some 40 trys, finally got a response to the ad he put in a music mag, it was Genesis looking for a guitarist. Steve was auditioned and played some examples alongside Rutherford (still in his nightgown). He played a blues-style, a poprock and something he called atonal.
Now you will find precious little atonal "composition" in Genesis' output. Its all structured.
But then again there is the track, "The Waiting Room" - atonal, jam-like.
This is where Genesis live pulled out all the stops and went freefall. There are live versions, like Empire Theatre Liverpool '75, going up to 10 or so minutes long.
Im now listening to a 58 minute "Waiting Room" collected from 7 live concerts. Of course, each one different.

The excellence of Prog is beyond reproach:
Faithless ones, you need to be brought back to the prog fold.
You are pathetically behind the prog times.
Rightous Prog will overcome.
Rise to a spiritual exultation.
spend eternity in the heart of The Creator.
Prog will give meaning to your life.
Certainly the follower shall be raised above the unbeliever.
Rejoice, acquiesce for surely the day of Prog draws nigh.
May the Prog illumine.
Reason obligates you to open your heart to its caress.
FOR LET IT BE KNWN pROG CLEARS THE MIND AND SHARPENS THE SENSES.
pROG SETS THE BLOOD RACING.
pROG CALLS YOU .You feel one with it.
The pungent ecstacy of Prog flows like a river of sensation over your head.
