Westie, at least your amp choice isn't a cooker for a preamp and this for a power amp...
This is my very own amp bought on ebay not that long ago (same scratches and marks) and found on an image search. Intended to be hidden or with optional parts, rack mounted, used in a public venue or in the wooden case that could be got for them. Sounds bloody marvellous, so there! Big transformer and supply caps, so almost qualifies as a muscle amp - almost...
Looks better dressed properly in its wooden case and with front panel, don't it?

I don't know how to safely remove the id label to repaint or replace the top cover. When I began at KJ watford in 1974, the demo D-150 was placed on top of their ladderax style demo furniture with heatsinks pointing up as pictured above and all but hidden from view collecting dust. The following year, the 'A' version came along, with proper front panel, power switch and gain controls moved to the front in the 'black leatherette' strip. A few years later, the amp was basically turned upside down and revised front panel was charcoal black (see ken Rockwell test of this version, it 'measures' very well even today). Very difficult to connect up in original A form, at least the connectors can be got at when 'standing' in its front. Back to the DC300A for a second. This was in the days before 'domestic' equipment racks, so a tall front panel and short front to back wasn't an issue really. crown did a proper 'muscle range' Power Line, where the styling was significantly smartened up for high end domestic use but I believe the innards weren't so different (didn't need to be in the days immediately before Krell and 1 ohm panel speakers...) In this form, I think it qualifies as a muscle amp -
The PL3 based on the D-150 turned into this -

Try not to own big amps these days.. I like moderate, size Vintage Jap amps i can fully service & just enjoy the glory of what they are. Always been a fan of 70's Japanese amps.. Had a Techy 'SU-V4' for years doing nothing, that is because it is broken, because of the STK output packages which are notorious for it. These cannot be bought new anymore. But now im in a position to fix this amp.

Had my JVC on today. I still think it’s a helluva good amp, Especially for speakers that like to be driven. It’s really whetted my appetite for something really special from Japan. But then I come to my sense and remember how much I enjoy music with the Campion. One day maybe.

I wonder how many of the were made. Probably next to zero chance of a mint pair, but nice to see even on video

I wonder how many of the were made. Probably next to zero chance of a mint pair, but nice to see even on video Those SE-A1 Power amps were so expensive that kinda puts pay to finding one.. They were monster Class A, DC amps. Over 50Kg. 375Watt into 8 Ohm/420 Watt into 4 Ohm.. Saw one for sale a bit ago 17,000Euro
