Would you buy if you had the surplus cash? Id be straight out ordering a J.A.MICHELL 'GYRO SE'. Id ask for the platter weights to be finished in chrome cos i hate Gold with a passion. I would also ask for no oval plaque to be added, they look shit tbh. i dont like 'ORBE' turntable, the platter just akes away everything i love about the 'GYRO'. I foolishly sold a 'GYRO' Mk.1 some 20 years ago. Arm would be a AUDIONOTE 'THREE' with a Chrome plated counterbalance weight to match the weights. www.hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/122134-audio-note-arm-3/

I had an an Orbe SE that I never tried. I had arm and cartridge sat there but never wired it up. It even had the NC power supply. I do regret that, especially as I let a mate have it for what eventually amounted to goods worth half what he immediately flogged the orbe for. One of the bits he gave me was faulty and another got wrecked in the post. Somehow every time I do somebody a kindness I seem to get grief in return.

I’m not sure I cage for the SE versions looks-wise. The full versions look more “right” to me. Spinning weights are good though.

Well i had the original 'GYRO' with the alloy platter that was obviously with Acrylic base, very big deck with it that i just wouldnt have the space for now, plus i hate Turntable lids in general, those unicovers for the 'SE' are more ideaL, they look shit fitted but its only to keep the dust of the platter & arm really.

Having had a full Gyro and now the Orbe SE I prefer the skeletal version to the big plinth and heavy lid. Don't miss the spinning weights either. Probably the novelty wore off after 20 years. The Orbe sounds better which is what counts, plus it still looks good.

Any reason you left the turret cover off?

Any reason you left the turret cover off? Easy to make adjustments and meant to sound better (though it's very marginal).

But isnt the finger lift suppose to be detrimental to sound?

But isnt the finger lift suppose to be detrimental to sound? I left it off at first. Couldn't hear a difference when I put it on for convenience.

Thats good to know cos i could never hear a difference. No way could i live without a finger lift. I use the finger lift to place the arm onto the record, no way on earth would i ever let the arm drop on the record using a cue. I just use the cue to lift off at the end of the side.

Another negative from me regarding the REGA arm, horrible finger lift, so ugly & wrong shaped imho. Wish the head shells looked more like the cheap 'RB110' but without a finger lift that you could fit loose if you wanted.

A real pity you don’t fancy the OL Onix or it’s cheaper brother. They are nicely made and finished, work perfectly, have proper bias and tracking weight, are height adjustable and don’t use that silly 3 point mount, They also sound far better. The entry level one is only £299 so a used one, maybe £200? No need to buy add ons so it’s once and done.

I know what you are saying about quality which is a shame cos they just look so ugly to me. The arm tubes are way out of proportion. I dont like how the head shell is just fixed to the top of the arm tube & the bearing housing is dreadful to my eyes, Or are the pictures highlighting these aspects? Believe me Westie if i could avoid a REGA arm i truly would. Im just desperado to get out of Hi-Fi ASAP.if all the visuals & bits are spot on ill just turn a blind eye to the arm brand, I have no intensions what so ever in spending more than i need to. I have knock it on the head or im never gonna give over. This hobby is one of the worse obsessive passtimes imaginable.

I know im not wired up correctly but even if i did buy that OL arm it looks a more expensive than the REGA arm which would make the deck & cartridge a bit down market looking hence my brain would be on fire cos i really dont want to be playing about with expensive cartridges & i dont have the energy to be messing about with another deck.
